| Listers all, I haven't read Janelle Gelfand's review in the
Cincinnati Enquirer and while Ms. Millo did get a warm reception,
she was eclipsed by tenor Antonello Palombi.
>.......... >.......... The star of the evening was newcomer Antonello Palombi. After a tentative "Recondita armonia" he quickly became the most compelling stage persona. His tone was powerful, bright and sharply focused with impressive dynamic range. "E lucevan le stelle" was a revelation, almost unbearably intimate. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra made up for whatever passion was lacking onstage with an impressive performance led by Giordana Bellincampi. The production from San Diego Opera features lavish one-point perspective sets by Jean-Pierre Ponelle and lighting design by Thomas Hase. The staging by Marc Venzant is remarkable for creating intimate moments on the huge Music Hall stage, in addition the requisite pageantry for the Act I finale. Last night I watched some of Ms. Millo's performances, courtesy of youtube. I found it hard to believe I was seeing the same performer. I hope she'll recover some of that passion and intensity tonight and next week. Anne |
